We are currently looking for people to fill the following crew roles. If you are interested, please email Andrei our Production Manager at productionmanager@undergroundproductions.org.au
The Stage Manager is responsible for the smooth running of everything during the run of the show. As SM you will coordinate Bump In (with the Production Manager), Tech and Dress rehearsals as well as managing the ASM and Lighting and Sound operators. During the run, you will be responsible for calling the lighting and sound cues as well as efficiently dealing with any problems that may arise. At the end of the run, you will also be responsible for managing Bump Out. Depending on the needs of the director, you may also be involved in the rehearsal period as well. You would be responsible for keeping the actors in line as well as making notes of blocking and design requirements to pass on to the designers, especially the lighting designer. You need to be a good communicator and able to manage time and stress well. You will work closely with the Director and Production Manager.
This is a great role in which to learn the ropes of Stage Management. The ASM helps the SM with their tasks as described above (including Bump In, Tech, Dress, and Bump Out). You would most likely be backstage during the show coordinating actors entrances and exits, costume changes, and set changes. In consultation with the SM, you may also be able to call the show on some nights (this also gives the SM a break!).
In this role, you would be required to design, source materials for and build an appropriate set for the play that adheres to the desired aesthetic (as discussed with the director and other designers). Construction skills are not necessarily important, though a willingness to learn, or to manage others with said skills would therefore be required. You would need to stay within an allotted budget and also to adhere to health and safety specifications for the set. Underground does have some materials available, but you would need to display resourcefulness.
In this role you would be responsible for designing the lighting for the show and implementing this design. You would need to consult with the director and other designers in order to keep to the desired aesthetic. Lighting equipment is provided for you though you may be asked to source gels and gobos etc as required (from our budget, of course). You will likely be asked to take on an apprentice/assistant as well. We are probably looking for someone with some knowledge, but we are certainly looking for someone willing to impart their wisdom onto others.
This role requires someone with creative flair. Working within a set budget, and in consultation with the director and other designers (especially hair and makeup), you will be responsible for designing and creating costumes for each character. Sewing experience is not necessarily vital, but you would then be expected to either learn, or find someone else willing to help you with this. Underground does have some costumes and materials, but these are limited and you would need to be resourceful as well as keeping to your allotted budget.
Working with the director and other designers (especially costume), the H & M person is responsible for designing the hair and makeup of all characters in keeping with the desired aesthetic. Actors could be required to purchase basic individual makeup (eg. foundation, eyeliner, mascara) but, sticking to a designated budget, you would need to source anything required to make your designs look great! Depending on the complexity of the design, you may also be required backstage during the run to apply makeup. However, if availability is an issue, this can be easily worked around. A great role for someone with little to no experience!
This role involves the composition or sourcing of music/sound effects that will be used in the production. Like all other design roles, the sound designer works in collaboration with the director and will follow their communicated aesthetic in determining how sound may be used (intro, scene change, atmosphere, etc.). The workload of sound design can't really be set in stone; depending on the director, the degree of presence sound may have can vary greatly.
We are now programming our 2012 season! If you have a new work in development, please get in touch.
